Chief Justice of Canada
1 July 1990 – 6 January 2000
Antonio Lamer, the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, led Canada through an important period of history with the application of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Joseph Charles Antoine Lamer was born in 1933 in Montreal, the son of Antonio Lamer and his wife, Florence Storey Lamer. He was baptized on the 23rd of July 1933 at St-Louis-De-Gonzague at Montreal.[1]
Antonio, Jr. followed in his father's footsteps and chose the law as a career. His father, Antonio Sr., was for years, a legal advisor to the Montreal Police Department. In 1955, Antonio Sr. established his own law firm; his son joined him at the firm which became known as Lamer & Lamer. [2]
Lamer was appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec in 1969. He was promoted to the Quebec Court of Appeal in 1978, and finally to the Supreme Court in 1980.[3]
In 1999, Antonio Lamer's announcement of his resignation from the Supreme Court--nine years earlier than expected--was met with surprise.[4] It was, however, not a surprise to the other eight Supreme Court Justices who had tactfully pointed out to Lamer that his "performance was not what it had been up until this time." With that, Lamer resigned.[5]
Lamer died in Ottawa on November 23, 2007. [6]
