Biography

Elias was born in Maryland in 1803 to Robert Crowley Lanham and Rachel Penn; he was one of at least seven children.

Sometime before 1820 he and his family migrate from Maryland to southeast Ohio, Clermont County. There he meets his wife, Mary Ann Lanham and they marry in 1827. Mary Ann's last name is identified as Lanham on marriage records; it is unknown if they were cousins or whether Mary Ann had been previously married to a Lanham.

Elias and Mary Ann remained in Clermont County raising at least nine children: Elliott, Notley, Robert Lewis, Amanda, Joseph, John, Polly Ann, Cornelia Ellen, and Augusta. US Federal Census identifies Elias as a farmer in 1850 and 1860, infirmed by 1870 and a widower, retired, in 1880.

A Civil War pension record would indicate he also fought during his ages of 57 to 59. Elias passed away in 1892 and is buried at Felicity Cemetery, Felicity, Clermont County, Ohio.
