Biography

He was born on his father and grandfather's farm known as 'Lanham Farm' and earlier "Lanhams Addition' in Piscataway MD. When his father, George Horatio Lanham quit his role as Sheriff of Prince Georges Co abt 1833, he transferred his Maryland assets to Edward and his sister, Susannah prior to moving to St Louis Co, MO to a new homestead near 'Chatham Station' western St Louis Co on Olive St on the Laclede and Creve Coeur Railroad where his father died in 1844 and buried.

Edward moved to St Louis MO abt 1836 shortly after his father by covered wagon as other family did abt 1834.

He married his cousin on 4 sep 1825 in Piscataway MD[1], Marth Edelin (recorded 'Eatland' on his son's death record[2] on 4 Sep 1826 in Maryland. They produced 4 daughters and a son in Piscataway and another five children after abt 1836 in St Louis[1]:

  1. Sarah Bayne, born Sept. 18, 1827, died 30 October 1831 In Maryland.
  2. Julia Hamilton Lanham, born Jan. 22, 1828, died Dec. 25, 1844 in St. Louis, Co., burled on the homestead.
  3. Josephine Susannah Lanham, 3rd daughter born May 11, 1829 in Prince George Co., Md., came to Missouri with her parents than to California with her Aunt, Mrs. Washington Coons, (Sempronia Lanham), in 1849. They traveled to California In covered wagons. She met and married Dr. James Howard. They lived in Sacramento, Cal. and had several children, 2 daughters, Mary and Gertrude, and 2 sons, Edgar and Arthur. Dr. Howard sold out his drug Store in California and came back to Missouri. On their wag, their little daughter Gertrude, was taken ill on the ship and died in Panama. Her body was taken back to California and burled in the Howard family lot in Sacramento. They reached St. Louis in 1866 with their small son, Edgar. Their son Arthur was born in St. Louis in August 1871. Dr. Howard served in the Mexican War In 1847. He died on the RR train going from Salt Lake to Omaha, and was burled by the Oddfellows. Mrs. Howard is still living in 1922 in St. Louis. She died in 1927.
  4. Mary Ollnska Lanham, 4th daughter born In Piscataway, Md. on 12 May 1830. Died In St. Louis on Finney Ave., near Grand, Sept. 13th, 1905, aged 75 years. She married three times. 1st, Dr. George W Beirne, Virginia gentleman. They had three sons, Edward W., Thomas Plunkett, and William Beirne, and a daughter Virginia who died very young. Dr. Beirne was burled in Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Beirne next married Harry Hambright died Civil War in New Orleans buried old Lanham Homestead In St. Louis Co., MO. Mrs. Hambright (Mary Ollnska Lanhsm), had two sons by this marriage, Harry Hambright, Jr and Lanham HambrIght who was drowned In the Trinity River at Fort Worth, Texas, while visiting a school friend, George Burnett. After 15 days, his body was recovered, brought back to St. Louis and buried in Calvery Cemetery in the Beirne lot. Mrs. Hambright married third husband Sylvester Chapman, in the City of St. Louis, MO,, in St. Malachi's Catholic Church on Clark Ave., and Summit. By this marriage she had twin boys, George and Sylvester, both died in infancy. Also, a daughter Emillie Chapman married first, J. P. Langston. They had two children, John P. Langston, Jr., and a daughter Margaret Mary. They separated and she went to Los Angeles, Cal., and married John Osborn Horton. By him she had a son, John Osborn Horton,Jr. They live in California. Mrs. Chapman is buried in Calvary Cemetery by the side of her first husband, Dr. G. W. Belrne, and her sons Edward and Thomas Belrne and Lanham Hambrlght. Edward Belrne her oldest son, lived In Denver, he marrled there, had one son, Edward, Jr. When Edward, Sr., died his wife married again, a Mr. Powell, and her son took his stepfather's name, and goes by the name of Edward Beirne Powell. He lives In Denver, Colo.
  5. George Horatio Lanham, II born 16 Dec 1839, in St. Louis Co., on the old Homestead. He married Miss Lioni DeLisle, a french lady. They were married In the City of in St. Lawrence O'Toole Church. He died In San Antonio, TX 1920. They had several children
  6. Richard Hamilton Lanham, 2nd son born 19 Oct.1843, died July 3, 1844, buried on the Old Homestead.
  7. John Watson Lanham, 3rd son born in St. Louis Co. on 20 Nov 1845 at the old Homestead. He served In the Civil War. 'When the war closed, he went to the Indian territory, (now Oklahoma), Married there, had twin boys, who died In infancy. Watson died there and was burled there.
  8. Edward Pliny Lanham, 4th son born In St. Louis co. on 15 Sept 1848 at the old Homestead, married no children. Died St. Louis 1921.

By 1850 and 1860[3] they are residing in Fenton, Bonhommen MO adjacent to his two brothers families, Thomas Daniel Page and Phillip Stewart Lanham in St Louis[4] with his sister, Sempronia Coons family and his widowed Mother, both of the later frequently mis-transcribed from difficult penmanship as 'Temponey'.
