Re Cary's birth in Newfoundland - I suppose it's possible that his parents may have lived up in Newfoundland for a while and had Cary there before returning to New London. Perhaps Joseph's wife Mary was even from up there. As an example of the large amount of New London presence in Newfoundland at the time, here's a link to a letter from the Winthrop Papers by Rev Richard Blinman who came up from New London on the way back to England. He mentions meeting William Keeny (Keeney-82) and [his son-in-law] Ralph Parker (Parker-5118) up there, who were both New London men. https://www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/exploration/richard-blinman-letter-extract-1659.php

I take it back. Caulkins says that there was a trade route between New London and Newfoundland. I'm not sure why his mother Mary Latham would have been on a voyage up there, but I guess it is possible.

I see in the Barbour collection where it says Newfoundland, but I have hard time believing that would be correct.
