Biography for Patrick F. Lavelle

When Patrick F. Lavelle was born in January 1879 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his father, Bryan Lavelle , was 34 and his mother, Mary Kennedy, was 31. He was their fifth child.

According to the 1880 US Census, the Lavelle family lived in Pittsburgh on Meyran Street. In the 1880 Census, the Census taker misspelled the surname for the family: Levell. I am sure that this is the correct family because all the names match for the Lavelle family. Patrick was two years old in 1880.

1880 US Census for Patrick F. Lavelle

In 1900, Patrick is 21 years old and still living at home. The family lives on Hodge Street in Pittsburgh, Ward 14, District 0173. His job is as a laborer.

In 1910, Patrick is living with his parents on Hodge Street. His age is listed as 28, but he should be about 31 at that time. His occupation is as a laborer doing odd jobs.

In the 1920 Census we find Patrick, age 42, is still single. He is living with his sister Agnes and her husband John Lavelle. In fact, Patrick's brother Martin and his mother Mary are also living with Agnes and John and their two daughters. Living nearby on Genesta Street is sister Mary (Minnie) Dunn and her husband William and their children. Patrick is employed as a millwright in a cutlery factory.

In my mother's notes, she said that Patrick remained single. This is verified by the census information. In 1930, Patrick is 51 years old and still living with his sister Agnes and her husband John. The census records only the three of them living on Wernet Street in Pittsburgh in District 248. He is now working in a steel mill as a car repairer.

In the 1940 census, Patrick is still living with Agnes and John. According to the questions about work, Patrick was looking for work and was performing emergency work with the WPA in a highway crew.

Finally, according to his death certificate, Patrick has moved out of his sister's home and moved to Philadelphia. Again this was in my mother's notes. It is verified by the death certificate. Here is the information contained in the death certificate:

Patrick Lavelle lived at 513 S. 41st Street in Philadelphia, PA. He was single and 65 at the time of death. He was born in Pittsburgh and was a laborer. His father was Bryne Lavelle from Ireland, and his mother was Mary Kennedy, also from Ireland. The informant was Agnes G. Lavelle, his sister. Her address was #2 Wernet Street, Pittsburgh 7, PA. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh. The DOD was Aug. 6, 1944. No COD is given. Instead a stamp appears in the area where COD is usually written. It says: Information supplied by Coroner's Office on this certificate. NOT OFFICIAL. Inquest Pending.
