  • Dover Express, Friday 15 November 1907 - page 5 -- Death of Major Lawes Major Robert Batholomew Lawes, one of the oldest, and for many years one of the most active, County Magistrates in the Wingham Division of East Kent, died at his residence, Old Park, near Dover, on Monday evening. He had attained his 84th year. In early life he actively supported the Volunteer movement in London, where he was Major of one of the Duke of Cambridge's regiments. He also was keenly interested in London Hospital work, and since 1863 was a Governor of St. George's Hospital. In 1854 he married Emma, youngest daughter of the Rev. Edward Murry, a Prebendary of St. Paul's. He leaves three children--Mr. Murray Lawes, his only son, and his two daughters, Lady Hamond-Graeme and Lady Sye and Sele. Lord Saye and Sele is at Old Park. It will be remembered that he is the hereditary Constable of Dover Castle, and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, in direct lineal succession from John de Fiennes, and although the right was never annulled after the wars of the Barons the offices were filled by the soveeign without regard to the hereditary claims of the descendants of John de Fiennes. Major Lawes leaves eight grand-children. Mr. Murray Lawes is now the owner of Old Park, and we understand will take up his rsidence there. Major Lawes purchased Old Park estate about 40 years ago, and he soon rebuilt the mansion on a new site adjacent to the old house, and took up his residence there. He was made a County Magistrate for the Wingham Division about the year 1875, and later was appointed as one of the Deputy Lieutenants of the County. Almost as soon as he settled at Old Park Major Lawes manifested his interest in Dover by offering to erect a monumental drinking fountain in the Market Square or some other suitable place, but the offer was never accepted, as the Corporation objected to the Market Square being used for that purpose, and no other suitable site was suggested. Later, Major Lawes carried out his intention in a modified form, errecting a fountain for horses and dogs adjoining his own land at the Elms turning of the Folkestone Road. The grounds of Old Park were many times in the summer, for several years granted for Sunday School and Band of Hope festivals, and the Major, who took a kindly interest in his youthful visitors, provided them with swings and other applainces for their amusement. His son, Mr. Robert Murray Lawes, a barrister of the Inner Temple, was a Parliamentary candidate for Dover in the General Election of November, 1885, in opposition to Major Dickson. Mr. Murray Lawes, although not successful, was the nearest winning of any Liberal candidate since Sir George Jessell's time. Mr. Murray Lawes was then approaching 29. The years that have slipped by since then have brought him up to 50. Mr. Murray Lawes was with his father during his last illness, and when he passed away. In addition to the Old Park estate, Major Lawes owned a great deal of Property around Dover, and was regarded as a very wealty landowner. Mr. Murray Lawes ws fordmerly the owner of Lympne Castle, near Hythe. Old Park is in River Parish, which church Major Lawes used to pretty regularly attend, but in recent years he was a frequent attendant at Buckland Church up to the time of his last illness. The cause of his death is believed to be natural decay, but it is said to have been accelerated by a fall that he had in the Park in August last. His medical attendant, Dr. Rubel, of Kearsney, regarded his end as being near a fortnight ago, and the prolonging of his days since then may be ascribed to his wonderful vitality. The funeral will take place at Ham, London, on Saturday, where Mrs. Lawes was buried about ten years ago. At the Dover Police Court on Tuesday, the Chairman Mr. J. L. Bradley, who was sitting with Mr. T. A. Terson, said: We have had the sad intelligence since we have been sitting here of the death of a very old, if not the oldest, Magistrate in this neighbourhood. I refer to Major Lawes. It has been well known that he has been ill for some time, and the end has come at last. He will be much missed, He has been a frequent attendant at the Petty Sessions here at Dover for a very long time. My colleague and myself wish to express our regret. Of course it must come at last, and he is of very great age, and has lived a long time, but we regret very much to hear of his death, which occurred at 9 o'clock last night.
