Biography

Bertha was born in November 26, 1914 at New River in Scott County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Samuel Lawson and Mary Etta ( Hicks ) Lawson . She married Sherman Adkins on March 30, 1929 in Scott County. she passed away from injuries received in a car accident on March 10, 1970 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.

Mrs. Adkins, 55, Dies Of Injuries In Wreck – A Huntsville woman had died from injuries received in a one-car accident February 28 on Highway 63. Four other persons were injured, some believed to be serious. Mrs. Bertha Lawson Adkins, 55, of Route 1, Huntsville died Tuesday at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville, where she was transferred from Scott County Hospital following the accident. State Trooper Bob McDonald reported that a 1969 Mercury, driven by Glad Adkins of Amherst, Ohio apparently went out of control on a curve, crashed into a utility pole and flipped. Mrs. Adkins was a passenger in the automobile, along with Beta Mae Phillips of Jefferson City (Tenn.), and Wilma Martin of Cincinnati. All the injured were taken to Scott County Hospital, according to investigating officers. Mrs. Adkins was the daughter of the late Sam and Ettie Hicks Lawson, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Capitol Hill. Survivors include husband, Sherman Adkins of Huntsville; six daughters, Mrs. Florence Woodward of Huntsville, Mrs. Bertie Mae Phillips of Jefferson City, Mrs. Wilma Martin, Mrs. Jan Ealy, and Mrs. Iva Lee Fraley of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Jean Jones of Columbus, Ga.; four sons, Glad Adkins, Paul David Adkins, Dwain Todd Adkins and Philip Adkins all of Cincinnati, John Lawson of Knoxville, Walter Lawson of Pineville, Tenn.; six sisters, Ida Chambers of Huntsville, Ollie Adkins of St. Louis, Mo., Bertie Ashley, Juanita Caudfield and Lola Chambers of Cincinnati, Connie Barnes of Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted from the White Rock Baptist Church 1 p.m. Thursday March 12, with the Rev. Shirley Cook and the Rev. Elmer Hurst officiating. Burial followed in the Cook cemetery.
