John Laycock as born on 28 Apr 1854 in Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. His parents were William Laycock and Margaret Todd.[1][2]
In the 1861 England census, John was living with his parents and siblings in Everton, Liverpool, England.[2]
John emigrated to the United States. In a letter to his brother Willie dated 16 Aug 1893, he was living in Seattle, Washington. He says the population of Seattle was about 6,000 and mentions use of telephones. His wife was expecting a baby in late November or early December. In a letter to "Dear Nieces" (probably Margorie and Kathleen Laycock) in Ireland dated 29 Aug 1904, he was living in Seattle, and noted as John H Laycock, Secretary, North Seattle Improvement Club. He notes the letter he had received from his nieces, having been out of touch with them since their return to Ireland, and refers to their father having drowned. (His brother William Laycock was lost at sea in Australia, his wife and children had then returned back to Ireland.) He indicates that he had typhoid and pneumonia in 1900. He sends a Post Office money order for $5 for Christmas 1904.[3]
He married Ann. Children were Vernon (born 1987?) and Gladys (born 1893). He worked as a painter and paperhanger in the US.[3]
