William Henry Laycock was born on 8 Mar 1861 in Everton, Lancashire, England, to William and Margaret Laycock. He was christened on 31 Mar 1861.[1]
William was a sailor. He signed on as ship's boy in 1872, and apprenticed 1874-1878. In 1882 at age 21, William received his Second Mate certificate of competency.[2] His application for this certificate confirms his birth date of 8 Mar 1861.
On a trip to Australia in 1884 aboard the SS Cambodia (O.N. 86185), one of the passengers was Susan Spencer, who was emigrating to Australia from Ireland. They became engaged, and married shortly after arrival in Sydney on 16 Apr 1884 in St. James Church, Sydney, Australia.[3]
William had signed up as 2nd Mate for the trip from London leaving January and returning September 1884. On 12 May 1884, he and two other men deserted the ship in Newcastle, Australia. Presumably he wanted to remain in Australia and with his new wife, rather than spend several months at sea returning to England.
They had 5 children: Margaret Agnes (1885), twins Catherine Jane and Frank Spencer (1988), William Henry (1890) and Gladys May (1893).
William Laycock continued to work as a sailor, eventually serving as captain on ships sailing along the Australian east coast. On 11 Jan 1894, while captain of the steamer Barrabool, William was lost at sea somewhere in the vicinity of Cape St. George, near Sydney, Australia, while enroute to Melbourne.[4] At that time, he and family were living at 1 Bank terrace, Park Road, Glebe, Sydney, Australia.
