Jeremiah Leaming was born in about 1717, probably in Cape May County, Province of New Jersey. He was the son of Aaron Leaming, Sr. and Lydia Parsons.[citation needed]
Jeremiah died before 25 Jan 1774, when the inventory of his estate was taken.
Jeremiah Leaming of Cape May County, yeoman, wrote his will naming "cousin" (aka nephew) Jonathan Leaming's daughter, Priscilla Leaming, heir to 400 acres of the land where he lived. He left additional lands to "Priscilla Raney, widow, now living in Cape May Co," and her son Enoch Raney (no relationship stated). He split the remainder of his extensive land holdings between the children "of his sister Elizabeth Leaming, deceased:"
Other bequests:
Everything else went to his brother Aaron and to his sister's children.
In a codicil to brother Aaron Leaming's will dated 16 Sep 1776, Aaron described a curious situation in which he said his brother "Jeremiah Leaming, at the time of signing his will, was under an illegal and undue influence, and thereby has given to my granddaughter, Priscilla Leaming, a plantation... which he had no right to do, he being under a solemn covenant to suffer it to pass otherwise if he died without issue...." Knowing this had created division in his family, Leaming still devised the property to Priscilla.
