Biography

Arthur was born in 1858, the son of Amos Leavitt and Rebecca Pollard.

The 1860 US census for Livermore, Maine listed residents Amos Leavitt (35), a farmer, Rebeccah [sic] A Leavitt (29), Edgar Leavitt (9), a student, Margett [sic] Leavitt (7), a student, Morris Leavitt (5), a student, Arthur Leavitt (2) and Amelia Pollard (70). Amos owns real estate valued at $3000 and has a personal estate valued at $650, Amelia has a personal estate of $150. All were born in Maine except for Edgar who was born in Kentucky.

The 1870 US census for New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine lists residents as Amos Levett [sic] (43), a farmer, Rebecca A Levett [sic] (42), Edger [sic] Levett [sic] (19), a teacher, Mary E Levett [sic] (17), a student, Morris Levett [sic] (15), a student, Arther [sic] Levett [sic] (12), a student, and Albert Levett [sic] (8), a student. Amos owns real estate valued at $2000 and has a personal estate of $800.

The 1880 US census for San Joaquin Judicial Township, Sacramento County, California conducted on 29 July 1880 lists the residents of a home as head of household Maurice Leavitt (25), born in Maine, a farmer, wife Almira Leavitt (20), born in California, keeping house, son Albert Leavitt (2 months), born in California, at home, partner Fletcher Lambert (25), born in Maine, a farmer, boarder Arthur Leavitt (22), born in Maine, a farm laborer, boarder Albert Leavitt (8), born in Maine, a farm laborer, and boarder Frank Billington (22), born in Maine, a farm laborer. NOTE: In addition to being boarders, Albert and Arthur Leavitt are younger brothers of Maurice.

He married Emma F Pratt in Maine on 4 July 1886. They were the parents of nine known children all born at New Vineyard, Maine:

The 1900 US census New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine conducted on 15 Jun 1900 lists the residents of a farm owned by head of household Authur [sic] Leavitt (43), born in Maine in Jun 1857, a teamster, his wife of fourteen years, Emma Leavitt, born in Maine in July 1868, mother of seven children, six living, daughter Gladys R Leavitt (13), born in Maine in Feb 1887, attends school, son Edgar P Leavitt (11), born in Maine in Oct 1888, a student, son Clement H Leavitt (7), born in Maine in Oct 1892, a student, daughter Ruth M Leavitt (4), born in Maine in Oct 1895, son Neal A Leavitt (2), born in Maine in Oct 1897, and daughter Marie F Leavitt (8 months), born in Maine in Sep 1899. They live next door to Emma's parents George W Pratt (65), born in Maine in Dec 1834, a lathe operator, and his wife of thirty years Filene [sic] Pratt (58), born in Maine in Oct 1841, mother of two children, one living at the time of this report.

The 1910 US census for New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine lists the residents of a rented farm located on the Sweets Pond Road as head of household Arther [sic] Levitt [sic] (51), a livestock dealer, his wife of twenty-four years Emma F Levitt [sic] (41), mother of eight children, all living, son Clemet H Levitt [sic] (17), a student, son Edgar P Levitt [sic] (21), a farm laborer, daughter Ruth M Levitt[sic] (14), a student, son Neal A Levitt [sic] (12), a student, daughter Marie P Levitt [sic] (10), a student, son Jerry L Levitt [sic] (7), a student, son Howard G Levitt [sic] (4), and father-in-law George W Pratt (71), widowed, a general farmer. All were born in Maine.

The 1920 US census for New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine lists residents of a farm located on Church Street as homeowner and head of household Arthur Leavitt (61), a livestock dealer, his wife Emma Leavitt (51), son Neil Leavitt (22), single, a laborer in lumber goods, daughter Marie (20), single, son Jerry (18), a student, son Howell (13), a student, and father-in-law George Pratt (81), widowed, a general farmer. All were born in Maine.

The 1930 US census for New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine lists residents of a home valued at $1500 located in New Vineyard Village and owned by head of household Arthur Leavitt (72), employed in the livestock slaughterhouse business, and his wife Emma Leavitt (62). Arthur is not a veteran and they do not own a radio set. He married at age 32, Emma at age 16. They were both born in Maine.

Arthur passed away in 1935 and is buried at the Hackett-Notch Cemetery, New Vineyard, Franklin County, Maine.
