Biography

John was born in 1752.

Research Notes

At present, it seems that two John Ledfords have been conflated. One would be the husband of Elizabeth Bryant and the father of William Alexander "Aley" Ledford; the other would be the husband of Philadelphia Stone and the father of James Ledford, John "Jack" Ledford, and William Ledford. A story, I believe reported in Egerton's book "Generations" and repeated (?) in a 2011 posting by Linda Hall, is that Elizabeth Bryant's husband was killed by a falling tree in 1802 while attempting to enter Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap. Some (perhaps 7) of the children attributed to them allegedly had either remained in NC or returned there. However, attempting to trace them through marriages and war records suggests that these 7 either were not John and Elizabeth's children, or they did not have the spouses attributed to them. Consequently, "Aley" Ledford seems the only more-or-less certain son of John and Elizabeth. At moment of my writing, I do not have access to the principal source for his lineage, but I will be able to consult it in the next week or so. At that time, I hope to revise this and related entries. But any information on primary sources relating to these persons would be warmly welcomed and greatly appreciated. --Michael Brown

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The records that I have, make it impossible for Philidelphia Stone to have married John Ledford. John died in 1802. Philadelphia had recently moved to Montgomery, Kentucky, and was still married to Zephaniah Ratliff. Zephaniah died in 1831. Philidelphia died in 1824 in Bath, Kentucky. The children listed here are the children of Elizabeth Bryant and John Ledford. They had 13 children.
You recently removed Philadelphia Stone-16267 as John Ledford's wife. But his first 3 children, James, John, and William, still show that Philadelphia was their mother. Do the 3 children belong with John and his wife Elizabeth Bryant-147. Or do they belong to Philadelpia, and should be removed as his children?
