Charles Herbert Leggott was born on September 29, 1884, in Bunyan, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada, the child of Richard George and Margaret (Metcalf) Leggott. [1]
He married Nina Mary Jenks on August 29, 1911, in Detroit, Michigan. They had three daughters, Charlotte, Margaret and Nina. His occupation was Electrician. He was a retired Electrical Inspector for the City of Detroit, Building Department.[4]
Charles was the Chief, Electrical Engineer on the excursion steamship 'S.S. Western States' of the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company fleet. This was a steamship that traveled between Detroit and Cleveland. Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company, often abbreviated as D&C, was a shipping company on the Great Lakes. The main route was between Detroit, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio.
The SS Western States was one of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co.’s Big Six of overnight passenger steamers. She, like the other five, was designed by master naval architect Frank E. Kirby and built at Detroit Ship Building Co. in Wyandotte, Mich. Though she and her sister ship, the Eastern States, were originally built for the Detroit and Buffalo Steamboat Co., which was absorbed into the D&C line in 1909.[5]

Research Notes
Leggott_Name_Origin
This is a truly ancient surname. Recorded in various spelling forms including Legatte, Leggate, Leggett, Leggitt, Legott, Leggott and even it is said, Legwood, its origins are French and English, but ultimately Roman. In the early days of history a legate was a Roman official ambassador, and this status is still maintained in for instance a Papal Legate, an ambassador for the Roman Catholic Church. Read more

Charles hobbies were photography and woodworking. He kept a photo developing room in the basement of the house at 600 Drexel in Detroit. He took still photos and movies. He also had numerous and expensive woodworking tools in the basement such a table saws, lathe and wood chisels. He made toys for the grand-children. I still have a child's work-bench he made. I remember all of it plus the big coal fired, later fuel oil, furnace down there. Also a wringer type electric washing machine and a toilet. Unusual for those days.
Their address was 600 Drexel Avenue (Changed by the City from 212), which was East of Jefferson Avenue near the Detroit River. You could hear the freighters air-horns at night (You did not notice the horns in daylight hours due to the noise of the city). They had three daughters during their marriage. He survived His Wife Nina Mary Jenks by three years. He died on February 23, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 73, and was buried in Berkley, Michigan.
He was a slim man of about five foot six or seven inches tall. Per my Mother, He did not care for a Farmers life. He worked as an Electrician in the construction industry and was apparently an early member of the Electrical Union, now, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 58.
His parents, Richard and Margaret (Metcalf) Leggott immigrated from England and settled to farm in Lambton, Ontario, Canada. For his occupation He was an Electrician in the contracting industry, crew aboard the "Western States" and later, after about 1924, He was an Electrical Inspector for the City of Detroit until he retired in about 1954. His hobbies were photography and woodworking. He had a photography dark-room in the basement where he developed his own movies and photos. He had woodworking machinery such as a table saw and a band-saw, and a lathe. He had a Hudson Motors four door sedan automobile which he kept in the garage in the rear of the house off the alley. He was a cigar smoker. He had family in Ontario and Western Saskatchewan, Canada, which he visited in his car. He subscribed to National Geographic Magazine, and would put a circular mark, with a blue ballpoint pen through the title to indicate that he had read that issue. He kept the copies and us kids would look at the pictures.
* Served as Chief Electrician, D&C Navigation Co. Steamer "Western States" per his Daughter (My Aunt) Nina Elizabeth Leggott (Ogar), related to me directly about 2006/7.
