Biography

John Caleb Lewis was born in 1863 in Madoc, Hastings, Canada West. He was the son of Isaiah Lewis and Catherine Bowen.

John, age 6, and his parents were living in Madoc Township in Hastings North in 1871. By 1881, when John was 16, they were living in the Elzevir and Grimsthorpe Township in Hastings North. [1][2]

John married Harriet Ellen Woodcock on the 25th of November, 1890 in Napanee, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada. ( John's sister, Ida Alberta Lewis ( who married Alex Quackenbush), was married just 5 days apart and was listed on the same marriage record. The first names of the parents of Alex Quackenbush and John Caleb Lewis are mixed up.)[3]

They had the following children;

  • Harry Milton Lewis b. 14 Sept 1891
  • Eleanor Maud Lewis b. 3 Oct 1893 m. Edward Hughes
  • Roy Calvin Lewis b. 8 Oct 1895
  • Violet Viola Lewis b. 23 July 1897 m. Gordon Wellington Hughes
  • Florence Amy Lewis b. 15 Oct 1902 m. Edward James McCaffrey
  • William Henry Lewis b. 28 Jun 1906

John and Catherine settle in Deseronto Village, East Hastings in 1891. John's sisters, Rosetta and Edith May are shown on the census in their household as visitors. Catherine would have been expecting her first child. [4]

John and Catherine then move to Kennebec, Lennox and Addington, Ontario by 1901. They stay there until some time after 1911 when they move to Kaladar, Northbrook and Flinton, Lennox and Addington, Ontario to run a hotel. John and Catherine were the original owners of the Kaladar Hotel. Its not clear how long they remained as proprietors of the hotel, but they were still living in Kaladar in 1921. [5][6][7] [8]
