John Lewis was born about July 4, 1792 in Kentucky, United States, son of John Baptist Lewis.

He was one of the pioneers of Missouri, crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis on January 5, 1795 when the population of St. Louis was only 200.

He married Sarah Jordan on October 21, 1817 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.[1][2]

He married Nancy Mann Curry.[3]

John passed away at an age of fifty-six on October 16, 1848 in St. Louis County, Missouri. He is buried in the Harbison-Lewis Cemetery in Sherman, St. Louis County, Missouri.[4]

1. Born in 1792, John Lewis (V-4) was born in Kentucky and 4 1/2 years old when his family arrived in St. Louis on January 5, 1797. He was educated to farm life but when quite young, he left his father's home and operated a steam ferry on the Mississippi River at St. Louis. He stayed with his family until he was 17 years of age and then joined the "Government Rangers" in 1810 and remained with them fighting Indians in the Missouri River country until the age of 21 in 1814. 2. It is thought that he served under Captain Nathan Boone from June 7 - July 31, 1812 (Indian War of 1812) ..... see page 163 from book, "The Lost Pioneer" by Daniel R. Long --- found at the Historical Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. 3. At the time of his death in 1848, he was residing in St. Louis County, Missouri. 4. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church ---- see article, page 304 of History of Arkansas re: A. C. Lewis. 5. Lewis-25412 and Lewis-7020 appear to represent the same person because: Same facts and same wives. The only problem is that they have different fathers attached. Profiles for fathers seem to be duplicates (they are currently listed as brothers with the same name). Father's profile needs merged or correct father determined.
