Biography

Alexander Lee Linn, son of Hugh and Mary Ann (Saylor) Linn, was the youngest of thirteen children. He is seen with his parents in the 1860 through 1880 census.^[1][2][3] Dr. George Linn's 1905 history of the family mistakenly lists his death as occurring in 1897.^[4]

In his father's 1879 will, Alexander was bequeathed 40 acres of his father's land.^[5] Sometime between 1880 and 1884, however, Alexander left his family's home in Bedford County, Pennsylvania for Washington County, Maryland. There he found work as a day laborer and was married on or shortly after 1 January 1885, when a marriage license was issued.^[6] He and his bride, Elizabeth Jane (Danner) Linn, made a home in Downsville. The youngest of their seven children, Raymond, was born fifteen years later, almost to the day. The family appears in the 1900 census as follows ...

The 1900 census states also that Alex and Elizabeth were married 15 years and Elizabeth was the mother of 7 children born and 7 living. Amos, Cambridge, and Bessie all were in school.

Tragically, Alexander died from "general debility" on 9 October 1900, when Raymond was just nine months old.^[8] Dr. George Linn's 1905 history of the family mistakenly lists his death as occurring in 1897.^[9]
