Biography

Elizabeth Bessie Locart (or Locort) is estimated to have been born about 1568 in Midlothian, Scotland.

Her marriage connection to John Black (b. abt 1558) has been found in a record for the birth of a son Patrick naming parents, but transcribing Patrick's birth date as 1692 (highly unlikely date if parent's birth dates are correct) and the record may have been transcribed for the database from a difficult to read original. The birth date of Patrick may have been 1592 rather than 1692. (But of course no one knows for sure without seeing the original record itself. The other possibility is that the birth dates generally assigned to John and Bessie were incorrect.)

Children that have been assigned to this couple by various family trees (often unsourced because of a lack of early records) have included:

John (went to Ireland), John (went to Massachusetts), Margaret and Patrick. I am adding references to this couple and their children found online below in Sources (but it should be recognized that some of these references may not be accurate.)

Bessie is believed to have passed away in abt 1641 in Midlothian, Scotland. If dates above are in the correct range, she would have been about age 73.

One son of John and Bessie, John who went to County Antrim in Ireland, is briefly referred to in The Ulster Journal of Archaeology ^[1], available at google books, but his presumed parents John and Bessie were not mentioned.

The specific passage on p. 186 of the Ulster Journal was written by a later John Black (Tertius) in a diary entry dated Dec 1754 at Bordeaux, who was then enjoying a family birth of a son, John Black the fifth, recently born in Bordeaux, France, which he described as being "in a lineal discent of the eldest son in our family originally from Scotland of those invited over thence by King James the first to Colonize Ulster in Ireland which had been laid waste and depopulated by the wars amongst the chiefs and their clans." This seems to be a direct reference to the son of John Black and Bessie Locart.
