Biography

William was the youngest son of John Lock and Esther Hardy.

William's family settled in Nelson after arriving on the ship Lady Grey of which his father was part owner. His father employed as a Labourer in Nelson and later a Carter was also involved in horse breeding.

William married in 1892 to Esther Georgina Levien, daughter of George Edward Levien and Eliza Heathwood, having 2 known children during the marriage.

He worked in Nelson as a Grain and Produce Merchant for 40 years and also as an Auctioneer. His first run for Mayor was strongly fought against William Wallace Snodgrass and was one of the fiercest election battles seen in Nelson. The win by a margin of just 5 votes. William successfully stood twice for election as Mayor of Nelson, serving between 1913-1915 and 1921-1927.

He was keenly interested in public affairs and was Chairman of the Education Board, a member of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. William was also involved with the NZ Municipal Association, Nelson Harbour Board and Cawthron Trust Board. For 53 years he served with the administration of primary and secondary education in New Zealand. His involvement with the Nelson Education Board lasted 30 years during which time he also served as a Chairman.

Esther was also prominent in service to community affairs, serving as President of the Plunket Society and held the MBE.

William Lock died age 82 in 1940 at his home in Collingwood Street, Nelson. He is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.

William's age at death is in conflict with his birth year and it may be no one surviving at the time of his death held conclusive proof of this.
