Biography

Thomas was born on January 18, 1785, in Barnstable, Massachusetts, the son of Christopher Lovell and Abigail Sturgis.[1] At 15 years old, he went to sea as a cabin boy and in 3 years was advanced before the mast. He returned home and was schooled in navigation and mathematics for a couple terms then returned to the sea. By the time he was 21 he became master of a ship. By the time he was 29 he had crossed the Atlantic 42 times.

After the War of 1812, he retired from the sea and settled on Sharp's Fork in what was Ames Township, Athens County, Ohio. Times were tough for a seaman trying to be a pioneer. He bartered with his neighbor, Elijah Latimer, some of his land in return for Latimer's hunting skill and that kept meat on he table for a while. He eventually trapped some wild turkeys, kept them in a covered pen, and eventually domesticated a flock.

Thomas lived the rest of his life on that piece of land and, during that 60 years, found himself in Ames Township, Homer Township, and Marion Township, Morgan County without ever having moved.

Thomas married Charlotte Norcross, the daughter of Seth and Jerusha (Learned) Norcross of Watertown, Mass., on 17 Aug 1806 at Boston.[2] (Thomas' brother Russell married Charlotte's sister, Helena). The children of Thomas and Charlotte were:[3][4]

  1. Charlotte Augusta, b. 7 Jan 1809; m. John Waldo Spurr, her maternal cousin
  2. Susan Gibson, b. 8 Oct 1811; m. John Ellis Vore, a farmer and drover
  3. Georgiana, b. 3 Jul 1814; m. George Walker, Jr., a merchant of Amesville, Ohio
  4. Thomas Russell, b. 30 Sep 1817; a farmer; m. Laurana Ellis
  5. Oliver Marshall, b. 11 Apr 1820; a merchant in Amesville; m. Rosanna Jenkins
  6. Augustine Washington, b. 19 Feb 1825
  7. John Waldo, b. 28 Aug 1827; d. 17 Nov 1912[5]

Thomas is buried in Joy Cemetery, in Homer Township, Homer County, Ohio.[6]
