Christening: 20 AUG 1703. Frutzweiller, Germany.

Died 24 DEC 1784. Amity, Berks, Pennsylvania, USA. Age: 81.

Occupation: Farmer and Stone Mason. Berks Co., Pa.

Michael and his brother, Daniel, who immigrated to America with him, were born in Palatinate, a division of Germany along the Rhine River. Their father, Michael, a sister (not named), and four brothers, Emmanuel, Philip, Jacob and Abraham Ludwig remained in their homeland. Michael and Daniel, came to America on the ship Pennsylvania Merchant, John Stedman, Master, arriving from Rotterdam on 18 Sept 1733 (Strassburger and Hinke).

In America, being Redemptioners (passage not being paid), Michael was 'bound out' to Jean Bertolette to build a mill near Friedensburg, Berks Co., PA for the sum of 60 pounds to pay his passage. This was the first grist mill in Oley Township, Berks Co., PA. It is not now known, but Daniel was likely bound out as well to pay his passage.

Michael, a mason and a farmer, did not marry until about 1740, near the time he took up his first land by Patent from William Penn in 1742 containing 107 acres in what is now known as Exeter Township. He later acquired two farms in Amity Township, one containing 272 acres.

He took the oath of allegiance, 6 May 1778, before Jacob Weaver. Michael was a Pietist (Montgomery, 319).

Michael Ludwig's Will (in part): Michael Lodewich (Ludwig), Sr. of Amity Township, yeoman. "Weak and aged in body". Wife Eva Rosina Lodewich. Sons: Phillip (he appears to be an unruly son), Abraham (youngest son), Michael, John, Daniel, Emanuel, and Jacob. Daughter: Susanna LEVAN (eldest child). Mentions: 1.) his 272 acre dwelling plantation with all buildings and improvements in Amity Township (to go to son Phillip or to Abraham); 2.) The plantation in Amity Twp., whereon son Michael lives; and 3.) The plantation in Exeter Twp., whereon son John lives. Executors wife Eva Rosina and son Michael. Witnesses: John KOPLIN and Jacob HERNER. Will dated 15 Nov 1783; proved 15 Jan 1785. [1]

It is supposed he was a promoter of the Amityville Cemetery where he is buried on the east side of the Church. His grave was unmarked until 1926 when a memorial was placed at the grave by subscription. He seems to have been a man of strong sterling character and worth. He was foremost in any event to better the conditions of the community.
