Edward James Lugard was born on 23 March 1865 and was baptised on 18 April 1865 at Worcester, Worcestershire, England[1][2]. He was the youngest son of Reverend Frederick Lugard and Mary Howard.
His mother Mary died on 12 June 1865 at age 45. Edward was brought up at St. Clement's Rectory, Worcester, England.
In the England Census of 1871, Edward J Lugard (6) was recorded living with his widowed father Frederick G Lugard (62) at Henwick Road, St Clement, Worcestershire. Also in the household was his aunt Frances A Cameron (48), his four sisters Lucy J Lugard (21), Emma C Lugard (20), Agnes Lugard (15) and Charlotte S Lugard (10), his niece Mary E F Aitchison (9), and two servants Jane Coderell (24) and Emily Doody (20).
In the 1881 England Census, Edward James Lugard (aged 16 and a scholar) was recorded at "Rossall School", Rossall Near Fleetwood, Thornton, Lancashire.
He fought in the Burma War between 1888 and 1889 and he fought in the Chin-Lushai Expedition between 1889 and 1890; he was mentioned in despatches. Edward was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1890.
He fought in the Manipur Expedition in 1891, where he was slightly wounded.
Edward married Charlotte Eleanor Howard (the daughter of Reverend George Broadley Howard) on 4 July 1893 at St James, Westminster, London, after Banns[3]. His sister Agnes Lugard was one of the witnesses.
They had one son: Cyril Edward Lugard (b. 11 Oct 1896, d. 1970)
He fought in the Expedition to Nganuland between 1896 and 1899 and he fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900.
In the 1901 England Census, Edward J Lugard (aged 36 and an Army Captain, Indian staff corps) was recorded living at Rose Cottage, Lion Lane, Shottermill, Farnham, Surrey with his wife Charlotte E Lugard (36) and their son Cyril E Lugard (6). Also in the household was servant Eleanor E Tubby (35).
Edward gained the rank of Major in the Indian Army. He was Political Assistant to the High Commissioner of Northern Nigeria between 1903 and 1906.
Between 1908 and 1912 he was Secretary of the Imperial Institute.
By 1911, Edward James Lugard (aged 46 and a Major Indian Army, retired Secretary Imperial Institute) was recorded living at Little Cote Oxshott Leatherhead, Stoke D Abernon, Surrey, England with his wife Charlotte Eleanor Lugard (41) and their son Cyril Edward Lugard (16 and an Army Student). Also in the household was their niece Winifred Ethel Parish (6) and servant Emily Luca (24).
Edward served in the First World War between 1915 and 1919. He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1918.
HIs wife Charlotte died on 22 May 1939.
He was living at Furzen Wood, Abinger Common, Dorking, Surrey when he passed away on 3 January 1957, outliving all but one of his siblings[5]. His Will was proved on 15 March 1957 at London to his son Cyril Edward Lugard, retired Major H.M. Army and Katharine Isabel Beatrice Lugard (Cyril's wife). Effects: £9897 5s. 6d.
