In 1862, at age 19, James Matthew joined the Civil War at the age of 19 as a Private in the 8th Kentucky Calvary on the Union side.
On the 1870 census, he may be the James who was living with another family, probably a relative, also named Richard R. Luttrell, but married to Mary J and with a different set of children: 1870 census for Casey County shows Richard R. Luttrell 57, Mary J. 47, Mary A. 29, Levi G. 22, John P.17, Talbot A. J. 13, Theresa M. 5, William 6, James 26 Farmer. He is not to be found with his family of origin on the 1870 census. On the 1880 census, he is married and no longer living at home.
He married his first wife, Elizabeth Betsey" or "Betty" B. Meeks (c. 1846 - before 1889) on 22 July 1870 in Casey Co., Kentucky.
Their children: Zachariah T. born c. 1872; Jessee D. born 09 Feb 1874 in Casey County, Kentucky; James F. born c. 1878; Henry Jefferson born April 6, 1879.
According to the family story, his first wife was depressed, and they went somewhere and left her locked in the house. When they got home, she had climbed up the chimney and jumped off the roof, killing herself.
He married his second wife, Rachel E. Roy (1872-1947) on 19 October 1889 in Casey Co., Kentucky.
Their children: Patrick N., Becca or Betty E., Electia or Electie Myrtle, Cora Belle, Everet McKinley, Ruth Mae, and Oliver Taft.
