Grandson Neil MacAlpine states, in May 2021: McAlpine was the family spelling for the McAlpines who immigrated from Scotland in 1818. Grandad Will changed the spelling to MacAlpine when he and Grandma Myrtle were homesteading at Westlock, AB. There are two stories on why he changed the spelling. One is that he met an Irishman who told him: "The Irish use Mc and the Scots use Mac". The other that Grandma told was that there was another William McAlpine near Westlock and they kept getting their mail mixed up. So Grandad took the Mac spelling. But there was other family that also spelled the name MacAlpine as the gravestones in Rickards cemetery attest.
