Biography
Lucenda Deborah or Deberah MacCarthy was born in 1909 in Ireland. She was the daughter of Robert MacCarthy and Elizabeth Freeman.
In the 1911 census Lucenda is shown with his family as: Robert 40, Elizabeth Ann 38, William Henry 10, Ernest 9, Robert 6, Annabella 5, Mary Francis 4 and Lucenda Deberah 2 [1].
The MacCarthy family arrive in New Zealand prior to 1921, as the eldest son William gets married in NZ in 1921. They arrive into Wellington in 1912 on the ship Remuera shown as: Mr R MacCarthy farmer Ireland, Mrs MacCarthy, Master W, Master E, Master R, Miss A, Miss M, Miss L all shown in the children category 1-12 years [2].
In 1932 she is shown having a motorbike accident with J W Sheddon [3]. Owing to a tyre bursting, a motor-cycle and sidecar overturned on a curve in the St Heliers Bay Road near St John's College, Purewa on Saturday afternoon, both the rider and passenger receiving injuries to the head and concussion. The rider was Mr J W Sheddon aged 27 of 48 Argyle St, Morningside and Miss Lucenda McCarthy of 17 Inverness Ave Epsom.
She married John William Sheddan in New Zealand in 1935, no children [4].
She passed away in 1989.
