The MacKillops are a sept of the MacDonalds of Keppoch. Those of the parish of Mabou are descended from Duncan MacKillop and his wife, a daughter of Alexander Beaton, Son of Alexander of Skye. Mrs. MacKillop died in Brae-Lochaber, Scotland, likely in Bohenie, where the family lived and from where they emigrated to Nova Scotia, eventually settling at Mabou Ridge. There were at least five in the family: Angus, Anne, Christina, ANNE, and Alexander.
Anne MacKillop, daughter of Duncan, married Duncan Campbell. She was a pioneer settler at South East Mabou. See p. 326.
Saint Mary MacKillop is a second cousin of my grandmother Catherine Campbell McDonald. Grandma's grandmother Anne MacKillop Campbell (daughter of Duncan MacKillop and Mary Beaton) was a sister to Saint Mary's grandfather. He went to Australia and Anne went to Cape Breton, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.
Duncan Campbell, the forebear of this family in the County of Inverness, was married to Anne MacKillop, daughter of Duncan, and sister to Pioneer Alexander MacKillop of Mabou Ridge. Duncan died in the old Country while his widow and her family emigrated and settled at Mabou. On their way from Lochaber to Mabou they spend some years in New York, USA, hence the family nickname "York". She was a grandaunt of the late Reverend Father John F. MacMaster, Parish Priest of Mabou. Her family were: Angus, John, Donald, Duncan, Mary and Allan. See page 715.
