Biography

Lachlan (MacKinnon) MacKinnon XXVI of Strathordill is a member of Clan MacKinnon.

In 1587 a severe conflict between the MacDonalds and the MacLeans caused great death. Each Clan ravaged the areas of the other Clan. Homes were burned, domestic animals slaughtered and many people were killed. The news of the extreme cruelty reached the King of Scotland and he used the Chiefs of the Campbells to undertake a mediation process between the warring Clans. Part of that effort involved the MacDonald receiving an assurance of a pardon for crimes and receiving eight hostages of rank from the MacLean in exchange for MacDonald performing certain acts to reduce the tension between the Clans. Among the hostages were brothers Lauchlan MacKinnon and Neill McKinnon, sons of Lauchlan Og MacKinnon of Strathordell, 25th Chief of Clan MacKinnon. The father's name is mentioned, along with the names of the two sons, in the Record of Privy Council of Scotland. [1] [2] [3]

The old feud between the MacDonalds and the MacLeans broke out again in 1598. This fued had raged, on and off, for many years. A major battle took place on August 5th at Lochgruinart, Scotland. Lachlan "Og" MacFingon/MacKinnon, the 25th Chief MacKinnon, [4] led his Clan as an ally of the MacLeans and they invaded Islay. They met the MacDonalds at Bern Bige and defeated them and ravaged the island. Lachlan Og died sometime after this and was clearly dead by early 1601. [5]

Clan MacKinnon Arms

Sir Lachlan MacKinnon, son of Lachlan "Og" MacFingon/MacKinnon, succeeded his father as the 26th Chief of Clan MacKinnon. [6] [7] [8] He is referenced as Chief when he is mentioned on January 8th, 1601, in a bond of friendship with Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyle. [9] [10]
