John died 10 June 1876 in Rockport, Kentucky.[1] In his will, dated 17 June 1873, he asked to be buried next to his late wife Amelia and to have evergreens planted by their graves instead of tombstones, and he named his descendants D.J.K. Maddox, A.P. Maddox, J.L.R. Maddox, Sarah Brown and husband Alfred, Mary B. Rowe, Eleanor A. Taylor, Elizabeth R. Casebier, Susannah H. Stroud, Charlotte H. Tichenor, and the children of daughter Paulina F. Baker dec'd, made E.G. Render executor, and requested the sermon at his funeral be preached by Bro. A.B. Smith, witnessed by Byram Tichenor, John Render and G.W. Anderson.[4]
