Mattie died in 1927 when she was an inmate in the State Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her cause of death was exhaustion with psychosis.[6]
There is a sad note in the newspaper announcing her death that states she left a husband and 4 children. Her brother attended the burial at Moore Union Church in Sanford, North Carolina.[7][8]
