Florence was born on 13 April 1859.[1] She is the daughter of Edwin Davis Maddy (abt.1828-abt.1899) and Alice Catherine (Fleetwood) Maddy (abt.1823-1859) who married on 12 January 1854.[2] Her birth was registered at Kensington, London, in the second quarter of 1859.
Sadly Florence's mother died on 29 April 1859, just two weeks after Florence was born.[3] It appears her paternal grandparents were subsequently heavily involved in her upbringing. (Her mother was buried at Down Hatherley, Gloucester, on 8 May 1859[4])
Florence Mary Maddy was baptised at Paddington, London, on 7 May 1859. This gives her home address as 9 Talbot Square, Hyde Park. London, with her father listed as a barrister at law.
At the 1861 census Florence is with her paternal grandparents at 35 Gloucester Place, Paddington, London. Census details - grandfather Edwin Maddy (64, retired barrister at law, born St Mary de Cript, Gloucester), grandmother Maria E Maddy (60, born Woodbridge, Suffolk), aunt Maria E Maddy (unmarried, 28, born St Michael, Gloucester), sister Charlotte M Maddy (6, born Paddington, London), brother William F Maddy (4, born Paddington, London) and Florence M Maddy (1, born Paddington, London). There are seven servants resident. In the meantime at this census Florence's father was resident at 24 Talbot Square, Paddington, recorded as Edwin D Maddy (widower, 33, barrister-in-law in actual practice and now employed as first class clerk in charitable trusts commision, born Gloucester, Gloucestershire). With Edwin Maddy are two servants, husband and wife employed as butler and housekeeper, with their 4 year old son.[5]
At the 1871 census Florence is again with her paternal grandmother, who is now widowed. The address is at Queen's Gate Place, Kensington, London. Details - grandmother Maria Maddy (head, widow, 73?, born Suffolk), uncle Francis T Ball (38), aunt Maria E Ball (38, born Gloucester), female cousin M E? C Ball (4, born Kensington), female cousin F H? Ball (1, born Kensington), sister C A M N Maddy (16, born Paddington) and Florence M Maddy (11, born Paddington). There are again seven servants resident. In the meantime at this census Florence's father remains close by, now resident at 6 Montpellier Square, Westminster, London, recorded as Edwin Davis Maddy (widower, 43, barrister-in-law, born Gloucester). Edwin Maddy is on his own apart from a housekeeper with her 14 year old son.[6]
On the three Sundays before her marriage in May 1880 Florence's banns of marriage were published in her huband to be's parish of the time in Oxford, where he was a student, giving her parish as St Augustine's Church, Queen's Gate, Kensington, Middlesex.
On 27 May 1880 Florence Mary Maddy married Alfred Charles Wells at St Augustine's Church, Queen's Gate, London.[7] The ceremony was conducted by the groom's brother, Rev Edward Wells (Edward Wells (1853-1930)).[8] The Reading Mercury reports that the groom's father, as well as being based in Wallingford, Berkshire, was also of 14 Queen's Gate Gardens, Kensington, close by to Florence's father, then of 10 Queen's Gate Terrace, Kensington.[9][10] The marriage was registered at Kensington, London, in the second quarter of the year.
At the 1881 census Florence and her husband are found at "Brightwell House", Brightwell, by Wallingford, Berkshire. Details - husband Alfred Charles Wells (head of household, 23, brewer, born Wallingford) and Florence Mary Wells (21, born Paddington, Middlesex). Also resident are three servants - cook, parlour maid, and house maid.
...... after residing for a short while at Brightwell, (Alfred) went to Braziers Park where he lived for many years...... .[11] The move to Braziers Park is tied down to 1882 in one source,[12] while another reference suggests this move was in 1883.[13]
Daughter Dorothy Alice Fleetwood Wells was born in 1882. Her birth was registered at Henley, Oxfordshire, in the first quarter of 1883. Her birth appears to have been after her parents moved from Brightwell House to Braziers Park, Checkendon, Oxfordshire.[14]
Second daughter Margery Teesdale Wells was born in 1884. Her birth was registered at Henley, Oxfordshire, in the second quarter of the year.
In 1890 Florence's husband, by Royal License, assumed the surname and arms of Arding, in compliance with the will of Cecil Arding who died in 1889. Cecil Arding had been the husband of Alfred's great aunt, on his father's side, who when he died had no surviving child.
Florence appears also to have adopted the surname of Arding from from this time.
At the 1891 census Florence is resident with her husband at 11 Milborn(e) Grove, Kensington, London. Details - husband Alfred C Arding (head of household, 33, magistrate banker, born Wallingford, Berkshire) and Florence M Arding (31, born London). There are also four resident servants and a visitor. It appears that the couple held this residence while also running Braziers Park in Oxfordshire. During this census the couple's two daughters are recorded as visitors in a household at Holdenhurst, Hampshire.
On 6 June 1893 the couple's younger daughter, Margery, died, aged 9.
At the 1901 census Florence and family are recorded at "Braziers Park", Checkendon, Oxfordshire. Details - husband Alfred C Arding (42, banker and brewer, employer, born Wallingford), Florence M Arding (41, born London) and daughter Dorothy A F Arding (18, born Checkendon, Oxfordshire). Also listed are four visitors (two aged 16) and eleven servants - 2 x ladies maid, 3 x housemaid, cook, 2 x kitchenmaid, footman, under-gardener and groom. It is considered likely that the family rented Braziers Park, a substantial mansion, at that time. There is a wikipedia article about the property.[15]
In 1909 Braziers Park was sold to Valentine Fleming,[16], father of Ian Fleming, author.
By the 1911 census the family are no longer at Braziers Park. The 1911 England Census confirms her husband has moved to "The Folly", Woodcote, Reading. Although Reading is a Berkshire address Woodcote is in Oxfordshire. Florence is not present at the census. Detail - Alfred Charles Arding (53, married, brewery director, employer, born Wallingford) and his neice Ianthe Newstead (Falkner) Pocquet (1884-1941). This census confirms that Alfred has completed 29 years of marriage, in which there have been two children, one of whom has died. Four servants - butler, cook, housemaid and page boy are also listed as resident.
Florence Mary Arding of Killundine, Drimnin, Morven, Argyllshire, N.B. (wife of Alfred Charles Arding) died 11 March 1929. Probate ...... to Annie Turner, spinster. (National Probate Calendar - 1929) Her death was registered at Morven, Argyllshire on 29 April 1929. Cause of death - chronic valvular disease of heart.
