Henry Mahlstedt migrated from Prussia to United States.
Reimer Mahlstedt was born on 15-July-1858 and was baptized 21-July-1858 in Marne, Schleswig-Holstein. [1] (In his birth and baptism record, his name is listed as Reimer Hinrich Mohlestedt.)
Reimer was born in the Duchy of Holstein, which was under Danish control at the time. As a result of the Second Schleswig War of 1866 (part of the Austro-Prussian War), when Reimer was about 8 years old, the area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. The area is on the north side of the mouth of the Elbe River in present-day Germany.
In 1882 he emigrated from Ramhusen, Holstein, Prussia (now Germany) to Davenport, Iowa. He was a carpenter and became a contractor in Iowa.
He left Hamburg sailing on the Berlin on 14-Mar-1882 and transferred to the S. S. Ethiopia in Glasgow before arriving in New York on March 31. During the voyage he was traveling with his first wife Maria and his sister Mathilda.
In 1882, he is listed as a carpenter in a Davenport Iowa city directory. In 1888, he is listed as a carpenter with McClelland & Co. In 1896, there is a listing for Mahlstedt & Andreson which indicates that he and Jens C. J. Andreson are contractors and builders with offices at the rear of 1419 Marquette.
The July 26, 1901 edition of the Davenport Daily Leader reported that R. Mahlstedt had been awarded a contract to erect a $3000 brick bottling works building for the Independent Malting Company.
According to various city directory and census records, he lived at the following Davenport Iowa addresses:
- 726 W. Second Street in 1882
- 121 Brown Street in 1884
- 1907 W. Second Street in 1888
- 1903 W. Second Street from at least 1896 to 1921
