"The agricultural interests of Wayne township are ably represented by John W. Mahoney... Born in this township March 6, 1851, he is a son of Hugh and Ruth E. (Johnson) Mahoney. ... [John Mahoney] was married April 30, 1881, to Miss Lena Smethers... Mr. and Mrs. Mahoney have two children: James Fremont ... and Florence, who is the wife of Clinton Smelser."

James died on 22 Sep 1927 in Wayne, Huntington, Indiana and was buried at Mount Etna in Huntington County, Indiana
