Biography
Gershom, the progenitor of all who have borne this surname by birth in Hingham, was in early life a mariner, and for a while a resident of Charlestown, where his first wife Mary died 30 December 1694, being, as the record says, "a young woman."[1]
He afterwards removed to Hingham second precinct, and marred secondly, at Sciuate, 1697, Waitstill Ingle. She died in Hingham 14 Nov. 1728.[1]
Gershom died 6 Aug. 1725, age 60 years.[1]
He resided on Beechwood Street in Hingham.[1]
In his will, dated at Hingham 27 Oct 1724, proved 14 Dec 1725, gives to wife Waitstill "the use of my dwelling-house and house lott of land and all my indoor moveables during her natural life." To son John £5. To son Ephraim 1/2 of my Home lot after my wife's decease." To daughter Mary Vinten £3. "All the rest of my estate to my two sons David and Nathaniel Marble." Sons; David and Nathaniel executors. Calls himself "husbandman." The inventory of his estate is quite lengthy, specifying among the items, 6 oxen, 5 cows, a bull, heifer, 2 calves, 6 swine, house, barn, etc. It is dated Hing. March 30, 1726.[1]
Gersham was born in 1660. He passed away in 1725.
