Bertha Markowitz was born 23 May 1885 in Hungary.[1]

Joe Feldman married Bertha Markovitz on 11 Mar 1906 in Manhattan, New York, New York. He was then 24 years of age (est. birth 1882) in Hongaria, the son of Morris Feldman and Lina Leffkovitz. She was 22 (est. birth 1884) in Hongaria, the daughter of Sam Markovitz and Hany Grossman.[2]

In the 1910 census[3] taken on 20 Apr 1910 Joe and Bertha were living at 419 John Street in Braddock borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They had both immigrated in 1899 and were not yet naturalized.

In the 1920 census[4] taken on 8 Jan 1920 Joe and Bertha were living at 622 Baldridge Ave. in North Braddock borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Joe had immigrated in 1898 and was naturalized in 1912. Bertha had immigrated in 1897 and was also naturalized. Their mother tongue was listed as "Jewish".

It lists their mother tongue as Yiddish, and they both immigrated in 1895 and were naturalized. Jacob (50) and Goldy Markovitz are living nextdoor with their family, and his occupation is butcher. Is this Bertha's brother? Son William Markowitz is a salesman in a furniture store as well.

Bertha Markowitz Feldman died 25 Sep 1961 (aged 76) in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Agudath Achim Cemetery in Forest Hills, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1][6]

  • Bertha's marriage records in 1906 state her parents were Sam Markovitz and Hany Grossman and she was married in Manhattan, New York. In this 1900 census record Sam & Hani Markowitz are living with 3 children (6 born/3 living) in Brooklyn, New York, but Bertha was not living there with them. She would have been about 15 at the time.
