Emily was born on 28 September 1851. She was the daughter of Peter Martin and Jane Greiner. She was still living with her parents during the 1870 Census.

She was married on October 29, 1871, Walnut, Illinois, to Joseph Castles, and they had 9 children (six of whom died in infancy).
