Virginia Ethel Martin was born on 6 October 1905 in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of John Martin and Stella Weil.[1] (It has been reported that she was born in Rangoon; her birth, however, was registered in New York). Her father was born in Hungary; her mother was American-born.
By 1910 her mother (going by "Estelle") had married a Walter Emanuel. Virginia was living with them in Manhattan, as Virginia Emanuel.[2]
Virginia was connected with Lucien Rosengart, a wealthy industrialist 25 years her senior, as early as 1927 and they were listed as married in the 1931 French census. In 1931 they were living at 16 rue Leroux in the district of Chaillot, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, with 6 servants.[3] In 1936 the couple was living at 10 avenue d'Iéna, still in the district of Chaillot, with their son Jean Louis, born 1932.[4]
Virginie Martin, born in Rangoon (sic), on 6 October 1909 (sic), daughter of Arthur Martin and Cécile Phillips (sic), both deceased, wife of Lucien Rosengart, died on 6 August 1936 at her home, 10 avenue d'Iéna in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.[5]
Virginie Rosengart née Martin was buried on 8 August 1936 in the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise in Paris.[6].
Virginia's death record is a collection of incorrect information; her date of birth is 4 years off, place of birth uncertain (her birth was registered in New York), and the names of her parents wrong (the name given to her mother is similar to her maternal grandmother's name, which is consistent with her mother trying to pass off as her sister).
Virginia is also listed as being born in "English Indies" on both 1931 and 1935 French census.
Although Virginia is listed as Lucien Rosengart's wife in census records, in her death record, burial record, and reportedly her son's birth record, the actual marriage record has not been found (it was looked for in all 20 arrondissements of Paris and several French cities where the couple had ties) and it is quite possible that they were not married at all.
