Biography

Jonathan was born in 1705, son of John and Elizabeth Mason. ^[1]

Jonathan Mason and Hepzibah Morse were married in Dedham in 1730. ^[2]

He passed away in 1779 in his 69th year ^[3] and is buried in Sturbridge. ^[4]

JONATHAN MASON was born on 5/27/1705 in Dedham, Massachusetts. He was the son of John Mason and Elizabeth Clarke. He married Hepzibah Morse (__), daughter of Noah Morse and Mary Johnson, on 5/13/1730 in Dedham, Massachusetts. They had 11 children: Elizabeth; Mary Lyon (1732-1815); Hepzibah; Jonathan Jr.; Abel; Abigail; Jesse “John”; Hannah; Silma “Silence”; Anna; and Nanny. In 1736 he sold his property in Dedham to Seth Wight of Medfield. That soon after, they moved to Sturbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, and by 1838 he purchased land from David Morse, where they had some of their children. An account by his son, Abel, said that when his father came to the area the bears, wolves, and deer were so populous that it was hard to raise cattle or grow grain. The account also noted that his family was with a group that lived a few miles away from the closest town, and that they would have to cross the Quinebaug River to come to meetings or get supplies. He described this as fording the river in the summer or by the men felling trees to make a crossing point during the winter. He also indicated that the whole group, women and children would make the 5 to 6 mile trip into town. Jonathan died on 10/29/1779 and Hepzibah on 10/20/1784, both in Sturnbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Jonathan was born in 1705. He passed away in 1773.
