She was born probably about 1740, and passed away after 1810. This name is uncertain. It was suggested in an old self-published genealogy but without source. The author essentially told me to get lost when I asked her about it. There was Matthews in the region of Surry/Stokes County and the eldest son William assumed the name as his middle name. (He was almost certainly not born with it as middle names were not used in those days, despite what many profiles suggest.) In any event, this is far better than the often cited Elizabeth Firmin who was actually was married to an unrelated William Cooley.[1]
