Biography

Gilmer [Gilmer, George R., Sketches of Some of the First Settlers of Upper Georgia, of the Cherokees and the Author, orig. publ. 1855, reprinted, Americus, Georgia, 1926.] states that:

"William Mathews, second son of Gen. Mathews, married Elizabeth Meriwether, daughter of Mr. Frank Meriwether, an exceedingly clever woman, as she proved in her after life by the admirable manner in which she discharged all the duties of wife, mother, friend and relative. William Mathews never studied Greek or Latin, was a planter and succeeded very well. He never held any office higher than Captain of the Militia of his district, and that was forced upon him, rather than sought for. Militia musters were great bores to many of the Broad River people..... William Mathews lived at the Goosepond until his death. His family soon after removed to the plantation which had been owned by General Blackburn, in Elbert County."

24 Oct 1806, Adams Co., MS - The will of Gen./Gov. George Mathews names "my son William Mathew’s four sons, George Mathews, Francis Meriwether Mathews, Charles L. Mathews and Samuel B Mathews." [1]
