Scotty was an American Film Actor

Scotty Mattraw was an American film and television actor, perhaps best remembered for having provided the voice of Bashful in Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Birth and Childhood

Winfield Scott Mattraw was born 19 Oct 1880, in Evan Mills, New York. He was the fifth of six children born to William H. Mattraw and his wife, Philamore (Dano) Mattraw. Scotty's eldest sister, Ida, died in infancy before he was born. His sister, Grace, died at age 13 in 1887, when Scotty was seven years old. Another sister, Edna, at age 20, five years later in 1892.

In 1900, at age 19, Scotty was residing with his parents and younger brother, Earl (age 15), in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. There, he worked as a salesman for an unidentified company.[1] Earl died the following year at age 16. Of his five siblings, only Scotty's sister Bertha lived long enough to have a family of her own.

Marriage and Family

Scotty married Edna A. Hunter 25 Jun 1903, at Watertown.[2] In 1905, the couple was residing at 10A Rutland Street, in Watertown, New York, along with their newborn daughter, Ada.[3] In 1907, Scotty was working as clerk for the American Express Company in Watertown.[4]

In 1910, the couple owned at home at 325 Winslow Street in Watertown, New York, where they resided with their three daughters: Ada (age 5), Rosalind (age 3), Marion (age 1). (Sadly, young Marion would pass away shortly after her first birthday.) At Watertown, Scotty worked as manager of an opera house.[5] From his 1918 World War I draft registration card, we learn that the opera house was actually the Remington Theater (later called the Majestic).[6]

In 1920, the family was still residing in Watertown, where Scotty now owned delicatessen in New York. A fourth child, son W. Scott Jr. was born to the couple in about 1914, but sadly youngest daughter Marion appears to have died sometime prior to her tenth birthday, as she is not listed with the family in 1920.[7]

Scotty and his family maintained the residence on Winslow until moving to California in the early 1920s. By 1930, the family was residing in a rented home at 1137 N. Normandie Ave., in Los Angeles.[8]

Hollywood Career

Upon arriving in California, Scotty found work with a variety of film studios, including Universal, Warner Brothers, Fox, and others. He made his film debut in 1924, with an uncredited role in the classic silent feature, The Thief of Bagdad (1924), starring Douglas Fairbanks. and The Red Mill (1927). Over the next decade and a half, he appeared in several uncredited film roles, often identified only as the "fat man."

In 1934, Scotty appeared in the Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy film, Babes in Toyland (1934), as the uncredited Town Crier and in 1937he played an uncredited merchant in the Shirley Temple film, Wee Willie Winkie (1937). Perhaps Scotty's most significant screen role, however, was that of Bashful in Walt Disney's landmark animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Following Snow White, Scotty would appear in just two more film roles, that if the Beef King In Old Chicago (1937), and as an uncredited migrant in The Grapes of Wrath (1940).

Final Years and Death

In 1940, Scott and Edna were residing at 1817 Rodney Drive in Los Angeles, along with their two youngest children, now both adults. Scott had no occupation listed in the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, suggesting that, at age 59, he formally considered himself retired by this time.[9] In 1942, when he registered for the World War II draft, he described himself as 'unemployed".[10]

Scott died of coronary thrombosis, at age 66, 9 Nov 1946, at Hollywood, California. He was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.[11]
