Notes

Variations on Surame

As was common for the time this family had several children and several names were used multiple times but in different combinations. Often there was special significance placed on specific family names, making it important to use them when naming children, especially sons, in case one died early or for legacy purposes. Agatha and Hans Michael used the names Johann, Jacob and Friederick (various spellings are excepted for each) for several of their sons which has led to data confusion and misinformation that has rapidly spread through the online Geneology databases. The LDS site has the following birth records for their sons:

* Johannes Mauser: February 11, 1735 * Jacob Friederich Mauser: Sep 26, 1740 * Johann Jacob Mauser: April 12, 1743

Ancestry.com has a question/answer section for "When did this line switch the spelling from Mauser to Mouser?" The most comprehensive answer is as follows:

* Surnames: Mauser, Mouser " In NC after 1767 'Fried' Frederick Jacob Mauser with wife Anna Maria Hauck migrated from Pa to NC near Newton. with his father-in-law Thomas Winckler. Their fifth son, Frederick Mauser(b.1774) left home with his friend Alexander Pope in 1797 down 'the Wilderness Road' for the Kentucky frontier. In Stanford,Ky, he met Betsy Donann, and married her with his friend Pope as a witness. The marriage licence bore the name Frederick Mouser. The couple moved to Marion Cty,Ky, at Gravel Switch and raised ten childern. All of these children went by the name Mouser. The remaining siblings in NC continued to use Mauser, esp.John Mauser. His father 'Fried' had signed the Tyron Declaration of Independence in August,1775. His estate was settled Oct.28,1799. It involved 381 acres of land plus.Frederick in Kentucky on a deed Aug.26,1816, sold his inherited interest in the land to his younger brother John Mauser for .00,Lincoln Cty, NC. Three of his older brothers, Michael&George together with a younger brother, Heinrich Mauser, bought 2057 acres of land in SE Missouri in 1804. I do not know if they had changed the name at that time.'Fried'Mauser had arrived in America@ age 11 with his father, Hans Michael Mauser, they had left their village of Osechingen,Germany,in Sept.1751@Philidelpia. The 'Mauser Haus' still stands in Osechingen to this day. His family were reformed Lutherans. Yours, Art Mouser"

Notes on Immigration

  • Johann Daniel Baumann/Bowman's father, Daniel Baumann (born 1716) and Anna Maria Moser/Mouser/Mauser's father, Hans Michael Moser (born 1707), came together to Philadelphia on the same ship, Duke of Wirtenberg. (Both of these families ended up in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Please note that Hans Michael Mauser is recorded as Mauser, Hs Mich, on that same ship list.)[3]

Family in NC History

* "Tyron Resolves, Fried was a signer (his name is listed on Wikipedia!!): The Tryon Resolves were a brief declaration adopted by the citizens of Tryon County in the Province of North Carolina in the early days of the American Revolution. In the Resolves, the county vowed resistance to coercive actions by the British Empire against its North American colonies. The document was signed on August 14, 1775." [6]

I don't think children Benjamin, Richard nor John born 1783 belong to this couple as I can't find many records in general, but there is nothing on FamilySearch, Findagrave, Genealogy.net, Rootsweb, BillionGraves, PeopleLegacy etc... Please let me know if there is a link so I can source it or remove it.

Thanks! Becky

Mauser-4 and Mauser-100 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same birth and death dates as well as the same wife.
