Biography

This profile is part of the McAdoo Name Study.

John McAdoo was reportedly born in Ulster, Ireland in about 1732.

Research Notes

His profile in FamilySearch (#L62B-CC2) states that his parents were William McAdoo and Nancy Hogshead. This same profile lists his siblings as William, James and Eleanor. There are, however, no sources to confirm this.

John married Ellen Nelson in about 1753 in Guilford, North Carolina. Their children are listed as:

  • Sarah McAdoo - b. 1753
  • James McAdoo - 1754-1799
  • David McAdoo - 1758-1815
  • Samuel McAdow - 1760-1844
  • John McAdoo Jr. - 1762-1818
  • William McAdoo - b. 1764

John is listed on the 1755, 1759 and 1760 tax lists of Rowan County, North Carolina. He is also listed in the 1790 and 1800 United States Census records for Guilford, North Carolina.

John died some time after the 1800 Census in Guilford, North Carolina.

McAdoo-376 and McAdow-35 appear to represent the same person because: Correct spelling of last name is McAdoo. Only his son Rev. Samuel McAdow used the spelling "McAdow."
