Biography

"The Reverend Samuel McAdow (1760-1844) [the proper spelling of the name is evidently McAdoo, but I follow the usage of the Church Records.] was born, April 10, 1760, in Guilford county, North Carolina. He was the youngest of eight children, four of whom were boys; the four others were girls. His father, John McAdow (abt.1732-abt.1800), emigrated from Ireland when young, and settled in Guilford. He there married Ellen Nelson, who had also crossed the Atlantic. The father was a farmer, and both the parents were Presbyterians, members of the old Buffalo Presbytereian Congregation, which was at the time under the pastoral care of the Rev. Dr. David Stewart Caldwell (1725-1824). The mother seems to have been a very pious woman, and Rev. McAdow often spoke of her in his subsequent life, bearing testimony to the great excellences of her character and piety of her life. He did not enjoy the benefit of her counsel and watchful care long, as she died when he was about ten years of age."

Ellen McAdoo was born from about 1733 to 1736 in Guilford, North Carolina, the daughter of Alexander Nelson and Margaret Moore. She married John McAdoo in about 1753 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Their children are listed as:

  • Sarah McAdoo - b. 1753
  • James McAdoo - 1754-1799
  • David McAdoo - 1758-1815
  • Samuel McAdow - 1760-1844
  • John McAdoo Jr. - 1762-1818
  • William McAdoo - b. 1764

Ellen died in about 1770 in Guilford County, North Carolina.
