ED. EMPIRE: Our community was shocked at the death of one of our best citizens, Mr. Jacob McCarty, who was so favorably known throughout this county. He was born in Mississippi in 1834, came to Texas while a mere boy with his father, settling in Anderson county, where he remained until grown, when he married and moved west, settling on Duffau, in this county, where he has resided for twenty-five years, or more. When the county was sparsely settled and overrun with Indians, he made himself useful in the defense of the country.
Mr. McCarty had been in bad health for several months, and on Saturday last was stricken with paralysis, and the best medical aid could afford him no relief. He died Monday, and the day following (Tuesday) his remains were interred in Duffau cemetery. Business of every kind was suspended, and all turned out to attend the funeral obsequles which were conducted by Rev. L. R. Scruggs.
He leaves a wife and several children who have our sympathy.
