Biography

James Bradley McClelland (aka McLelland) (1) was born about 1787-1791 in North Carolina, USA (2). He was married to Mary McCoulskey.

According to some Ancestry member family trees, he was married to Nancy McCarley and/or Nancy McCorkey. (1), (3). According to DNA however, he was married to Mary McCoulskey, who has been DNA proven to be the mother of his daughter Nancy Amanda McClelland in 1837 (8). Another variation of spelling for Mary McCoulskey's name has been seen as Mary McColski (4).

On November 27, 1830 James "Jim" was living in Marion County, Mississippi, USA. He was described in the census of 1830 as 1 male 30-40 years old, and his wife was described as 1 female 30-40. His children living with him at that time were described as 3 males 0-5, 2 males 10-15, 1 female 0-5, and 1 female 5-10. Also included in his household were 2 female slaves 0-10 and 1 female slave 10-24. There were a total of 12 people in his household in 1830. They were still living there in 1840 (5).

On August 20, 1850 they [Jim, Mary, and their children] were living in Marion County, Mississippi. Jim was a farmer, with property valued at $ 800.00. The census lists he was born in North Carolina. Children living in his home at that time were Mack McClelland, N. McClelland, Samuel McClelland, William McClelland, M. McClelland, and Nancy McClelland (6). In 1860 they [Jim and his wife; and children] were still living in Marion County, Mississippi. Jim was about 73 in 1860 (based on the 1860 census of Marion County, Mississippi); or about 59 (based on the 1850 census of Marion County, Mississippi, USA). He passed away after 1860, in Marion County, Mississippi (6), (7). He is believed to be buried in Marion County, Mississippi (3).
