Biography

Adam was born perhaps between 1720 and 1725 in New Castle County, Delaware. He is believed to be the son of John McCool Jr (abt.1690-1761) and John's first wife, Mary (Laws) McCool (abt.1694-abt.1725). Some suggest his DOB could be as late as 1732, but that seems unlikely (and would probably change his mother to his father's second wife).

Adam first married Jennet "Jean" Love, aka Jane Love, probably about 1753. Adam's 1801 will names his second wife, Mary, plus three sons and three daughters, all born with Jean.

  • Joseph
  • Mary
  • John
  • Adam Jr
  • Jane
  • Rachel

The will of James Love (1705-1760) named Adam McCool as his son-in-law.

First wife Jean was still alive in January 1788, when she was named in a lawsuit. On 9 Nov 1788, Adam married Jean's younger sister, Mary.

Adam passed away on or about 16 Jul 1801 in Union County, South Carolina.

Will

In the name of God, Amen. This sixteenth day of July, Anno Domini One Thousand Eight Hundred, I, Adam McCool of Chester County and State of South Carolina (Yeoman) being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory, thanks be to God for his mercies, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, in manner following, that is to say, first I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors herein after nominated and appointed and touching such worldy estate wherewith, it has pleased God to bless me in this life.

I give, devise, bequeath and dispose of the same in the following manner and form Imprimis, it is my will and I do hereby order that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid off and satisfied as soon as may be convenient after my decease.

ITEM, whereas I have already granted and confirmed to my two eldest sons to wit, Joseph and John McCool their heirs and assigns forever, a part of a six hundred acre tract of land, being a part of the same Tract whereon I now dwell, as by my respective grants to them will appear. Therefore, they are not to have any more of real estate.

ITEM, I give and bequeath unto Mary my beloved wife, one negro wench called Fillis, one horse and saddle, likewise, my house and kitchen furniture and a sufficient maintenance during the time she remains my widow, and likewise the use of all my cattle and their increase and the remainder of my horses and other stock, I leave in the care of my son Adam as the property of my wife, likewise my house and negro man Sie and as to her maintenance to have one half of the profits arising from my Plantation and Ferry. The above negroes and horses to be employed in the best manner on the second Plantation and Ferry.

ITEM, I give and bequeath to my son Adam and his heirs, the remaining part of the six hundred acres of land above mentioned, likewise the half of the profits arising from my Plantation and Ferry, also my wagon and gears and all farming utensils and tools.

Also I will that the one half of the property mentioned to my wife be at her decease, the property to be disposed of at her discretion and lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint my sons John and Adam McCool executors of this my last Will and Testament to execute the same according to my true intent and meaning in this my Will contained. In testimony whereof, I the said Adam McCool have to this last Will and Testament set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.

Signed, sealed and delivered by the said Adam McCool as his and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of James McCool, Andrew Daves and Zac Love.

Adam McCool (seal)

Recorded 10th of February 1801 in Will Book A, Page 116,117 and 118, Box 3 Package 8. James Woodson, Clerk of the County of Chester, South Carolina.

ADDENDUM to Will of Adam McCool - 1801 Chester Co., SC. Even tho the Will of Adam McCool states "I, Adam McCool of Chester County and State of South Carolina"....his Will was NOT recorded in Chester County, S.C. but in Charleston County, S.C. According to a memo dated June 1969 from Jeannette McCool Parr, "Charleston was where all S.C. papers were filed at that time". Sorry for the confusion about where his Will was actually recorded.

Research Notes

This is presumably the same person as Adam McCool Sr. (1731-1800), but no merge request has yet been sent.

MacCool-2 and McCool-334 appear to represent the same person because: We have extensive documentation showing that James Love was the father-in-law of McCool-334. As far as the surname spelling differences, spelling was quite fluid in colonial times. Adam's father spelled is surname McCoole, while in most (of many known) records, Adam's surname is spelled McCool. Adam's first wife is noted as Jean or Jane; his second wife was Jean's younger sister, Mary Love.

Update: the two profiles have been merged.
