Martha E McCoy (McCord) is an enigma. There's almost nothing known about her life before marrying George Adams, and her death date and place is uncertain. There's no clue whatsoever concerning her burial place, beyond anecdotal and conflicting accounts. There's a growing body of evidence for a link to the McCoy families in northern Giles and southern Maury counties, Tennessee. Her marriage records list her last name as McCord, but family members in the direct line insist she was a McCoy (with a wide range of variant spellings). Census records from 1850 and 1860 show a Martha E. McCoy at about the right ages in Maury County, Tn., the same area that George W. Adams is from in the same time-frame. If you have any information at all that may be pertinent, I'd love to hear from you. [1]
Martha E. McCord Adams (c.1846-unknown). Some family sources suggest that her maiden name may have actually been McCoy, though her marriage record has her name as McCord. Note that some secondary sources give her middle name as Elizabeth, but this information has not been confirmed by this contributor. Note also that some sources give her date of death as 1893 and others give it as 1896 – neither of which has been confirmed by this contributor. Census information indicates that she was born in Virginia and that her parents were both from North Carolina. {This is a placeholder for further information to be added later by other family members.}
