Biography

Mary (McCormick) McGirr was born about 1821 in Eden Island Townland, Donagh Parish, County Monaghan, Ireland, daughter of Alexander McCormick (1791 - 1863) and Margaret (Martin) McCormick (1792 - 1832). Her birth date is calculated from the Canadian census records. She is listed as living in Eden Island in an 1821 church "census" so it is highly likely that she was born there. [1]

Her siblings were:

  1. Hugh McCormick (1810 - 1880)
  2. Andrew McCormick (1813 - 1899)
  3. William McCormick (~1815 - ~1880)
  4. Henry McCormick (1818 - 1888)
  5. Alexander McCormick (1821 - )

Mary married William McGirr (~1811 - 1873) on 7 Jan 1841 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bytown (present-day Ottawa), Carleton County, Canada West. [2] [3] Their children were:

  1. Alexander McGirr
  2. Mary McGirr
  3. Robert McGirr
  4. John McGirr
  5. Henry McGirr
  6. Margaret McGirr
  7. William McGirr
  8. Ellen McGirr
  9. James McGirr.

Mary died after 1891 aged >70. The last record we have of Mary is the 1891 Canada Census for Osgoode Township, Carleton County, Ontario. [4]

Head of household census:
1 married male ages 21-29
1 married female ages 14-44
1 married male ages 30-59
1 married female ages 45 and up
The married male ages 21-29 would be William McGirr and the married female ages 14-44 would be his wife Margaret McCormick. The older couple is presumably William's parents.
