Biography

Eugene Albert McCullagh whose surname has been determined as McCullagh; has some records still to be found under different spelling.

He was born in 1864 in Victoria, Australia to Adam James McCullagh and Eliza Jane Thompson.

All that is known of his mother is that she died in New Zealand in 1910.

However, his father reached the age of 100 years 8 months in the year 1926. His obituary supplies the following detail. [Part copy] "Adam, his father, was born in the County Amagh Ireland and emigrated to Australia in 1857. He was a miner on many fields; he became a store keeper at Ballarat, Victoria Australia. He moved on to Rockhampton and Townsville in Queensland Australia and his final stop was Auckland, some 15 years, before his demise. Unfortunately there are no parent's names on his death record.

Between 1855 to 1875 his parents had seven children and the first five were boys; Eugene being the fifth son."

Eugene attended Kings College in Melbourne to gain an education and he was head of the Commonwealth Postal Department. Another source claimed he was a Civil Servant stationed in Brisbane for forty years; his death notice described him as a retired Civil Servant. That death notice also reveals he died in the MRD Hospital Taree, I suspect MRD means Manning River District. His Funeral service was to finish at Dawson Cemetery, and I have never confirmed that event. I did fine a list of souls buried in Dawson cemetery New South Wales however, there were none named McCullagh or MacCullagh or anything else like these

Northern Territory Times and Gazette [Darwin N.T.] Thursday 3 May 1917 page 3 places Eugene Albert McCullagh; as returning officer for the electoral roll for Brisbane.
