Finding Betty McDonell's parents is somewhat complicated by the fact that her original birth certificate was issued as "McDowell" and had to be corrected by a later one in 1957. In addition, her mother's first name in the 1920 U.S. Census was incorrectly transcribed as "Joy", when it should have been Ivy. It could be read either way, but the "I" looks different from the way this enumerator wrote "J".
Elizabeth/Betty McDonell was the daughter of John P McDonell and Ivy Sullivan. She was born in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California on 9 August 1913. [1]
Surname corrected in 1957. [2]
Her parents and siblings were listed in the 1920 U.S. Census in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California. Betty was 6 in June of that year. [3]
In 1910, Betty's parents were in Sebastopol with her eldest two brothers, but were enumerated as McDonald -- a common occurrence for McDonells and McDonnells. The significance of this census is that it confirms that John P.'s wife's name was "Ivy", not Joy. [4]

The siblings for Betty McDonell can now be profiled from the birth records with parents: John (P) McDonell and Ivy Sullivan in Sonoma County, California.
Given the number of places where Betty's maiden name was spelled "McDonell" in the 20th century, this may well be the correct spelling. Both did exist. Finding her marriage record, which may have a signature, would assist in this determination.
