Lewis was born in 1811. He married Ainsley Covington about 1839 based on census data and the births of his children. He enlisted in the CSA at the age of 50 and served as a private in Company I of the North Carolina 43rd Regiment. He practiced "Thomsonian Medicine" as stated in his obituary , He passed away in 1896.
